The Rota Vicentina is one of Europe's great long-distance walking networks, tracing the southwest coast of Portugal from Santiago do Cacém down to Cabo de São Vicente. Two main paths make up the network: the Fishermen's Trail, which hugs the cliffs and dunes as close to the Atlantic as the terrain allows, and the Historical Way, which winds inland through cork groves, whitewashed villages, and farmland.
For guests staying with us in Vila do Bispo, the trail is close enough to walk to directly — several access points sit within a 10-15 minute drive, and a few are reachable on foot. The stretch between Vila do Bispo and Cabo de São Vicente is considered one of the most dramatic on the entire route, with cliffs dropping straight into the ocean and, in spring, wildflowers covering the clifftops in white and yellow.
Best time to walk: spring (March-May) for wildflowers and mild temperatures, or autumn (September-October) to avoid summer heat. Bring good walking shoes, water, and sun protection year-round — there is little shade along the coastal sections.
Ask us at check-in and we can point you to the nearest access point and a route that fits the time you have.
